Think everyone in Wales get to elect their councillors? Think again. Over 100,000 welsh voters live in wards that are uncontested - meaning the public have no say.

Election Cancelled

This is because Welsh councils have a voting system that doesn’t accurately represent how we vote, and seats in County Hall do not match the number votes parties receive. Candidiates just don't bother to stand any more.

In Powys 7 councillors won without a vote being cast, in Ceredigion 5 councillors won this way, while over in Gwynedd 28 councillors - 41% of the council - took up their seats without a contest. This isn't a sign of a healthy democracy.

In 2021 a law was passed that gave us the power to make all our voices heard. Your councillors have the power to move to the Single Transferable Vote (STV) a fairer, improved way for us to choose our councillors that's been used in Scotland for over a decade. It solved the problem in Scotland, and can do it here.
